Rightly Dividing the Word of Truth
(II Timothy 2:15)
Hell vs the Lake of Fire
Revelation 19:20-21; 20:7-10; 20:11-15
In the previous lesson, we looked at why God created Hell.
Scripture revealed the answer in the book of Matthew, chapter 25, if you recall.
41: “Then He (The Creator God/or Jesus Christ) will also say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels;
The LORD GOD deemed that the unrighteous would be divided from the righteous; and not just temporarily but for an eternity.
Thus, we learn there is a need for separation.
God assigned the Archangel Michael with the task of putting down this act of defiance.
The Angel, Michael
7: And there was a war in (where) heaven, Michael and his angels waging war with the dragon (the “dragon” in Revelation is the devil). The dragon and his angels waged war,
8: and they were not strong enough, (have you ever heard the phrase, “Mighty is our God?” There is no way a created being is going to overcome or subdue the One who created it) and there was no longer a place found for them in heaven (separation).
9: (Here we have God’s judgment on the rebellious angels and their leader) And the great dragon was thrown down, the serpent of old who is called the devil and
(watch this) Satan (deceiver/father of lies), who deceives the whole world; he was thrown down to (where exactly – not Hell but) the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.
Never forget God knows the beginning from the end of all things. He alone sets the plan and purposes it. Always (ALWAYS) keep this in mind
I intended to do something else; but I have to follow up on this.
I have to show you what Scripture says; or else people will think I’m going off the deep end. After Satan’s defeat in the third heaven, God cast him and his followers to the earth. To pick up on this truth where do we first find the devil/Satan in Scripture?
Please turn to Genesis 3.
The Fall of Man
1: Now the serpent (Satan) was more crafty than any beast of the field which the LORD GOD had made (created). And he said to the woman, “Indeed, has God said, ‘You shall not eat from any tree of the garden’?”
The devil is in God’s garden before Eve is deceived by the devil and before Adam’s sin.
Where was Eden located?
It was located somewhere in present day Turkey on the earth!
We know that Lucifer’s fallen angels are here on earth with him too because this book tells us this is so. But the interesting thing to take note of is this.
Not all of these are free to roam about the earth. Some of these rebellious angels have been held in chains since their rebellion was overcome. Let me show you what the book says. Please turn to the little book of Jude. It’s just to the left of Revelation.
5: Now I desire to remind you, though you know all things once for all, that the Lord, after saving a people out of the land of Egypt, subsequently destroyed those who did not (what’s the next word) believe (I’m going to hammer the concept of faith until everyone within earshot or eyesight gets the message. God absolutely insists that we believe what He has said)
6: And (this is why we’re here) angels (the ones who were deceived by Lucifer and joined him in his rebellion against the LORD God) who did not keep their own domain but abandoned their proper abode (means they lost their place in God’s heaven), He has kept in (what) eternal bonds under darkness for the judgment of the great day.
As I said previously, not all of these sinful angels are roaming freely with the devil on this earth. Some of them are chained and are being held in darkness by God until judgment day. And this fits with what Scripture has already revealed to us.
II Peter 2
4: For if God did not spare (the fallen) angels when they sinned, but cast them (some but not all) into hell and committed them to pits of darkness, reserved for punishment;
How do we know there are free roaming demons on this earth?
There are written accounts of Jesus’ “casting out” demons in the gospels.
This practice continues by His disciples and others, including the apostle Paul, on up through the book of Acts. (Acts 5:16; 8:7; 16:16-18; 19:12-16).
There is one particular Jesus encounter with demons that I want to draw your attention to because it relates directly to the “timing” of God’s judgment these fallen angels.
This event is recorded in Matthew, Mark and Luke.
Remember what I’m trying to show you.
The LORD God did not cast all of the fallen angels immediately into the place God created for them (Hell). Some of these were but not all.
The Bible does not reveal the LORD God’s purpose for doing this.
This miracle occurred in Gadara, a city located east of the Jordan River, on a mountain, about six miles south-east of the Sea of Galilee.
Jesus Casts Out Demons
24: When He came to the other side into the country of the Gadarenes, two men who were demon-possessed met Him as they were coming out of the tombs. They were so extremely violent that no one could pass by that way.
29: And they cried out (demons are controlling these men – remember that), saying, “What business do we (plural – take note. There is more than one demon and they are perplexed at seeing Jesus here before them) have with each other, Son of God? Have You come here to torment us (please read carefully) before the time?”
These demons recognized Jesus as the Son of God; but what threw them for a loop was His appearance at this particular point in time.
You see, they knew it was not yet their appointed hour.
Let’s look at another one.
Please turn to the book of Mark, chapter 5.
The Gerasene Demoniac
1: They (Jesus and His disciples) came to the other side of the sea (of Galilee) into the country of Gerasenes.
2: When He got out of the boat, immediately a man from the tombs with an unclean spirit met Him,
3: and he had his dwelling among the tombs. And no one was able to bind him anymore, even with a chain;
4: because he had often been bound with shackles and chains, and the chains had been torn apart by him and the shackles broken into pieces (a display of incredible strength – wouldn’t you say), and no one was strong enough to subdue him.
5: Constantly, night and day, he was screaming among the tombs and in the mountains, and gashing himself with stones (we’re getting more details in this account).
6: Seeing Jesus from a distance, he ran and bowed down before Him;
7: and shouting with a loud voice, he said, “What business do we have with each other, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore You by God, do not torment me!”
8: For He had been saying to him, “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!”
Satan and demons recognize Jesus as God’s Son.
This demon saw Him coming from far off, ran up to Him, and bowed low.
This demon pleaded with Jesus not to torment him.
This is what sentencing will bring eternal torment.
Clearly, legion is aware of the “sentence” which hangs over his head; similar to a swinging pendulum blade that will ultimately find its mark.
There’s one more report.
Please go to gospel of Luke, chapter 8
The Demonic Cured
26: Then they (Jesus and His disciples) sailed to the country of the Gerasenes, which is opposite of Galilee.
27: And when He came out onto the land, He was met by a man from the city who was possessed with (watch this) demons; (many) and who had not put on any clothing for a long time, and was not living in a house, but in the tombs.
28: Seeing Jesus, he cried out and fell before Him, and said in a loud voice, “What business do we have with each other, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg You, do not torment me.”
29: For He had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For it had seized many times; and he was bound with chains and shackles and kept under guard, and yet he would break his bonds and be driven by the demon into the desert.
30: And Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Legion”: for many demons had entered him. (A Roman army division/Legion contained anywhere from 3,000 – 6,000 soldiers including cavalry just for your information)
31: (read carefully) They (legion) were imploring Him (Jesus) not to command them to go away into (where) the abyss. (Hell – the place of eternal torment/suffering which was prepared for Lucifer and those who joined in his rebellion against God’s authority sometime back in eternity past.)
As I previously said, I did not intend to take this side trip; but when Bible verses come to mind I know the Holy Spirit is leading, so I respond.
What have we learned so far?
God returned Lucifer and “some” of his rebellious angles to the earth after their defeat, for God’s purpose, and for a predetermined time period.
The LORD God has already judged them. They are awaiting sentencing.
And that day will come. God has determined it.
The second half of the tribulation period is called the great tribulation in part because Satan knows his time on earth is short.
12: “For this reason, rejoice, O heavens and you who dwell in them. Woe to the earth and the sea, because the devil has come down to you, having great wrath, knowing that he has only a short time.
Satan knows this book inside and out; but he rejects it and the Truth!
He knows how to work it, and you to his advantage.
He’s not about promoting you.
He is the destroyer.
Never forget this.
About two years ago, while teaching the book of Genesis, I introduced a controversial Bible topic called the “Gap Theory.” I didn’t spend a lot of time on this subject because as I said the subject is controversial. As for me, it fits with Scripture.
I didn’t teach on it because it’s Bible theory and not fact.
At the end of this Bible lesson I have inserted a hyperlink to a website that may shed some light on the origins of Lucifer and the angel’s original home, their rebellion, leaving their original domain which was the earth, attacking the Creator God in the third heaven, suffering defeat by Michael the Archangel, being thrown back down to the earth, the earth once a beautiful place is now dark, void, and covered in water, and this is where Satan and his fallen angels are now restricted prior to the rejuvenating the planet and creating man. You may want to check it out.
Please note this is by no means an all out endorsement of this website.
I thought it was an interesting find and I wanted to share “this bit” of information with you; but not all the “Bible stuff” you are going to encounter at this web address.
I have not had time to look into all of it; so be alert.
