"Yes, I am coming quickly." Amen.
Revelation 22:20

This is a Home Bible study. It exists to promote the Word of God as it's written, which means nothing added or taken away, and minus opinions.

The Bible is the only source of Divine Truth in the world today. Although it is both helpful and informative in many ways, the Bible often doesn't tell us everything we want to know but the Bible does tell us everything we need to know.

My role is to guide you through the Scriptures; to explain what this book says and in some cases what it does not say because this is just as important.

Ultimately, you have a decision to make concerning your salvation - no one can make it for you. The Lord Jesus Christ, the Creator God, has given everyone the ability to make choices - this is is called "Free Will." I pray you consider your choice wisely.

II Timothy 2:15

Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth.

Rightly Dividing the Word of Truth
(2 Timothy 2:15)

This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. 1Timothy 2:3-4

Romans by the Book                                                              Lesson 16

I want to welcome our regular members and then offer a warm welcome to all those who are visiting HBS for the first time.  Just so you know we meet in a home in Lutz, Florida twice a month for food, fellowship, and to study the Word of Truth, Rightly Divided; with our shoes off.  That is to say, this is not a suit and tie event.  I don’t want you to get the idea that we’re a group of “stuff shirts.”  We are people just like you.
We don’t sit around all day contemplating Scripture.  But we do love the Lord Jesus Christ because He first loved us and we believe in the accuracy of the Bible.  In light of these facts, we set aside blocks of time for Bible study.

Just FYI: although I use multiple Bible translations in my Bible study, and in my writings I prefer to use the New American Standard Bible translation in my day to day.  Note:  not all Bible translations are equal in their interpretation of the original manuscripts.  This website will help you understand what I’m saying:  http://www.apbrown2.net/web/TranslationComparisonChart.htm

When I decide to use another Bible translation because it’s better suited for my teaching purpose; I will notate that for you at the end of the verse.

Let’s review the previous lesson– repetition is the best learning tool.

In Romans chapter 1, The Apostle Paul wrote about the gentiles of old, after the Noahic Flood event and then forward in time, who “suppress the truth in unrighteousness” (verse 18).

The Word of God says, “For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened (verse 21).

You can’t hide from the Truth!  This book says, “…that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them” (verse 19).
Therefore, these unbelievers, “are without excuse” (verse 20).

Verse 19 is informing us that we all are born with the knowledge of God.  It’s innate!  But the majority of people suppress this knowledge.

The Apostle Paul, who was led by God the Holy Spirit as he wrote it, listed “twenty indictments” against these unbelievers (Romans 1:29-31).

Scripture goes on to say they were “filled with all unrighteousness;” (verse 29); put another way, “they were morally bankrupt.”

To sum up:  Romans chapter 1 dealt with the unbelievers in the world.  These people “turned away” from God and embraced immorality on a grand scale.  So, “God gave them over” (verses:  24, 26, and 28).

Turning away from God is a choice one makes (it is a choice-you can’t deny it) and it is self-destructive.  It can be compared to ignoring the doctor’s diagnosis of cancer.  Unchecked both will eventually bring about your ruin.

An example of turning away and ignoring God’s expressed word appeared just a few days after posting Lesson 15.   The Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), the law barring the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages, which the individual states legalized; was ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court.  The high court stopped short of saying same-sex couples have the “constitutional right” to marry.  But let’s be honest, isn’t this the point of it all; isn’t this where they headed?

I receive a copy of Arutz Sheva news because I choose to keep up with what's going on in Israel.  I read an article in yesterday's Daily Report concerning the Supreme Court's recent decision and I thought I would share this with the group.

Rabbi Yoel Schoenfeld, Rabbi of the Young Israel of Kew Garden Hills in Queens, New York, told Arutz Sheva that the decision Wednesday by the U.S. Supreme Court striking down key parts of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), paving the way for greater acceptance of gay marriage, was a major step backwards for humanity that goes all the way back to the Biblical Bila'am, whose donkey spoke to him:

“This is a generation as foolish and as silly as Bila'am was,” Rabbi Schoenfeld told Arutz Sheva.  “When a donkey speaks to you, you don't get into a conversation with it. You are supposed to take note that something extraordinary is happening.”  Often, people see “wondrous” things, but just go about their business without taking note.

That was the attitude that Jews needed to take on the Supreme Court decision.  “To live in a world of fantasy where two people of the same gender can be wed ignores the thousands of years that man has lived with a traditional marriage.  The Supreme Court decided that anyone who believes that is bigoted,” Rabbi Schoenfeld said.
The decision, he said, was a “wake-up call” for Jews and others of faith in the traditional definition of marriage, that something was seriously askew today.

With the striking down of DOMA, a 1996 law that prevented gay couples from receiving nearly 1,000 benefits even if the state they lived in recognized their marriage, shows that “the world is upside down,” Rabbi Schoenfeld said.  “It's hard to understand how intelligent people like judges could make such a decision.  In a way, however, the decision was a reassuring one for Jews.  “Our sages say that before the coming of the Messiah the world will see many strange things happening.  Let us hope that this will be the final 'detour' off the path before the Messiah arrives."

As I stated in the last Bible lesson, the institutions of marriage and the family are under constant attack and outside stresses…and the pressure is mounting by the day.

We haven’t reached the “bottom” in America, speaking in terms of immorality.  But in my opinion, we’re not far from there.  As Scripture pointed out in the last Bible lesson, you know you’ve hit rock bottom when, “wrong is right, and right is wrong.”  You’ve reached bottom when evil becomes good and good becomes evil.  The bottom is where you are when the wrongdoers are publicly praised while the defenders of morality are detested and publicly scorned.  The preacher who stood up for the Word of God concerning the sinful nature of homosexuality one Sunday morning and then watched as people got up and left the church one after another is just one example of this present condition.

Let’s begin.  Please open your Bible to Romans chapter 2.

The Apostle Paul gave us a word picture in the previous lesson of mankind without God, as they turned away from Him in progressive stages.  Each sinful step they willingly took away from God was gradually worse than the one before it; with the final stage being “total” depravity…it’s a non-stop free fall on Satan’s slippery slope.

Now as we turn the page to Chapter 2 of Romans there is a shift in Paul’s argument.
The subject is no longer the depravity of unbelievers.  The focus shifts to the “moral crowd” the men and women who say, “I don’t live like the pagans.  I’m an upstanding citizen; that last chapter doesn’t apply to me.”

Before I go any further let’s look at the definition of moral = good, right, honest, decent, and proper – but not saved.  Romans 2 deals with the moral people who are lost.
I’m referring to all those folks who pay their taxes but they’ve been known to manipulate them on occasion.  They love their spouse or their steady girlfriend or boyfriend, but they occasionally flirt with someone else when the notion strikes them.  It’s just “fooling around; nothing serious” and if it should lead to something more…who’s to know and no harm done – right?  They attend school or they go to work on a regular basis but have been known to goof off or play hooky.  They trust in the law and keep them…well some of them.  I mean, who doesn’t drink and drive or add 10mph to the posted speed limit?  We’re good…right?

These people can be good neighbors; they may volunteer at a local food bank every now and then.  He or she probably buys 5 or more boxes of Girl Scout cookies every year!    But even though these people visit a local church every now and then, even though they drop a $20 bill into the basket when it passes by, they are not saved.  They fit the description of “moral” but they do not fit the description of saved.

In one sense, these unsaved individuals are right.  Most people don’t live their lives the way those pagan gentiles did in Romans chapter 1.  It’s a good thing that some people have an appreciation for higher moral standards today, which brings us to the point of Romans chapter 2:  the “moral” men and women are just as guilty as the pagan gentiles who practiced the sins described in chapter 1.  Their sins may be different but their guilt is the same.

These moral men and women make up a rather large section of society today.  They may not practice wanton sexual immorality as the gentile pagans of old once did, but as far as God is concerned telling lies, cheating on your spouse, cheating on your taxes, or breaking any law is a sin. Therefore, they are guilty and will face His righteous judgment.

It is not easy to convince a moral person of their guilt.  They truly believe they are better than “other” people for this is their measuring stick.  In Romans 2:1-16, Paul shows why the “moral” individuals are just as guilty as the most depraved sinner.  He does this by citing the principles by which God will one day - judge the human race.

Please turn to Romans 2 and we’ll start at verse 1.

Romans 2

1: Therefore, you have no excuse, everyone of you who passes judgment, for in that which you judge another, you condemn yourself; for you who judge practice the same things.

2: And we know that the judgment of God (what’s the next word) rightly falls upon those who practice such things.

3: But do you suppose this, O man, when you pass judgment on those who practice such things and do the same (things) yourself, that you will escape the judgment of God?

4: Or do you think lightly of the riches of His kindness and tolerance and patience, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance?
Paul gives us three principles each one of which convicts the moral person of their sin.

God’s judgments are according to truth (verses 1 and 2)

Truth here refers to reality and not the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ.  It is life as it actually is.  God judges’ people according to reality, i.e. according to the way things are, not the way we would like them to be.

The chief problem with moralists is they are hypocrites.
They condemn others for practicing the same things they themselves are doing.

The great philosopher Al Capone once said, “When I sell whiskey, they call it bootlegging; when my patrons serve it on Lake Shore Drive, they call it hospitality.”
How true.  But let’s be honest with each other.  We’re all quick to condemn those wrongful activities we see in others that we excuse in ourselves.

A pastor greeted a middle-age couple who were having marriage problems into his office one afternoon.  After they were all seated the pastor asked the man what his main difficulty was and he asked the same question of the woman.  The man smiled and said with total honesty, “I see her problems much better than I see my own.”  The pastor gave him a knowing smile and admitted he understood what he was saying.  The pastor said, “I always look pretty good to myself!”

And that’s human nature.  All of us, even the best of us, are prone to hypocrisy because we all by nature let ourselves “off the hook” too easily with statement such as, “I’ve never robbed a bank or killed anybody.  That makes me better than him/her.”

This is a key principle of God’s judgment.  When the Day of Judgment rolls around, God will not be put off by man’s foolish or pious pretenses.  God judges according to reality – remember?  He knows how each person chose to live their life, especially when no one else was around to observe their activities.  That should be an eye-opening thought.

2.  Moral people think they can escape God’s judgment (verse 3)

These hypocrites who consider themselves to be better than other people, based on their own logic, naturally tend to think that they will escape God’s wrath.  But that is a false assumption.

Someone such as this becomes in his or her self-confident importance, blind to God’s patience, mercy, and kindness toward them – not feeling the need for these attributes of God; they are blind to the truth that the goodness of God is meant to lead them to repentance and not to JUDGMENT.

The goodness of God toward the sinner, if we choose to reflect upon this Truth and believe on it, moves the heart of the sinner toward His Redeemer.

Psalms 51

17: The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; A broken and contrite heart, O God, You will not despise.

This Truth once realized changes the whole attitude of the individual toward God.

Rightly Dividing the Word of Truth
(2 Timothy 2:15)

This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. 1Timothy 2:3-4

Romans by the Book                                                               Lesson 15

I want to welcome you all back to our study of the Apostle Paul’s letter to the Romans.
This is lesson 15 by my count and we’re still in chapter 1.  Now that’s a Bible study!

The idea of a Bible study is to get as much information and application as you can from the Bible verses under review.  We have only “scratched” the surface – believe me.
This is why I say, “Every time I pick this book up I learn something new.”
This is why the Bible is called, “The Living Word.”

A special thank you goes out to my friend Dennis.  He obviously studies these Bible lessons line by line and he does this with his Bible open.  I edit these lessons before they are published to my website, but I’m human.  Dennis calls me if I’ve overlooked something during the editing process such as a misspelled word or an omitted word in a Bible passage.  Hey, I’m human.  But he also calls me to discuss the lessons.  I like that.
So, thank you Dennis for your encouraging words and for your support.  You make a Bible teacher feel appreciated.

Let’s get down to business.  At the end of the last Bible lesson I closed with this phrase:

Scripture commands a Believer to flee from “all (sexual) immorality.”

1 Corinthians 6

18: Flee (sexual) immorality.  Every other sin that a man (or woman) commits is outside the body, but the immoral man (or woman) sins against his own body.

We learned that sexual immorality is the second step an individual takes, after idolatry, in their “turning away” from God.

Let’s return to our Bible passage.

Romans 1

28: And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper,

29: being filled with (how much) all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malice; they are gossips,

30: slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents,

31: without understanding, untrustworthy, unloving, unmerciful;

Some of you may be picturing the world we currently live in today while reading these verses above.  And that’s applicable, certainly.  But please remember Paul is writing to the Believers in Rome in reference to the gentiles of old, who “suppressed the truth (of God’s existence) in unrighteousness,” so “God gave them over.”

As any society starts to turn away from God it succumbs to idolatry.
It finds a replacement for God and His so-called “burdensome” “tiresome” rules.

This society will then begin to openly display widespread sexual immorality followed by open homosexuality.  After that, it is only a short step to the final stage of social decay.  The process for the individual is almost identical.

Verses 28-31 above describe a society that has replaced God with selfish, worldly delights.  It is a society without restraints, a culture that has lost all sense of right and wrong, a place where everyone does what is right in his or her own eyes.  There is a word for this in our English language.  It’s called anarchy = a situation in which there is a total lack of organization or control.

Scripture records a similar situation long after the call of Abraham amongst the Jews:

Judges 21

25: in those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes.

Even though they (the Jews) knew the one true Jehovah God and interacted with Him regularly, they surrendered to idolatry.  Of course this led to sexual immorality.

Truth is: we all are born with an Adamic Nature!

In verse 28, the two words “depraved mind” speaks of a mind that is clouded by sin.
It is a mind that is no longer able to make moral judgments.

Please read these few verses again.
Note that these sins cover the whole range of life: the home, the family, marriage, the workplace, and even your place of worship.  All of life is affected by a man or a woman’s decision to “turn his or her back” on God.

Nothing is the same, nothing is left unaffected; no area of life is left unscarred.

Romans 1

32: and although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them.

Here we have the final phase.  The Apostle Paul outlines three things that happen when men and women have completely turned away from God:

They are aware that the things they are doing are wrong.
They commit the sins anyway.
They praise others who join them in practicing these wrongdoings.

This is when you know for certain you have reached the bottom.
The bottom is where you are when evil becomes good and good becomes evil.
The bottom is where you are when the wrongdoers are publicly praised while the defenders of morality are loathed and mistreated.

When a preacher or a Bible teacher stands at the podium and speaks out against abortion and legalizing homosexual marriage because this is what the Word of God says, and members of the church congregation get up and walk out of the building because they are in disagreement with his statements, you are seeing the affect the liberal media has on about one-half of America today.

People insist that this is a Christian nation but statistics prove otherwise.  When Christians decide to base their actions on what some magazine, newspaper, or T.V. network says, rather than agreeing with the written Word of God, then you have a complete reversal of values in America.

Case in point:  my wife and I rented a movie not too long ago.  I won’t give you the name but I’m certain you would recognize it if I did.  It came highly recommended; a must see and rated PG-13.  We thought PG-13 - how bad can it be?  We soon found out.

The movie hadn’t played too long before we heard the Lord’s name used in vain x4.
There was one semi-nude scene.   I lost track of all the foul language and F bombs in the dialogue, there were several killings, blood everywhere, and young people were semi-dressed running around for no apparent reason.  That was enough for us.  We pulled the plug!  This was only PG-13!  Truth is – many people choose to keep watching…

Parents by the tens of thousands are dropping their children off at movie theaters every weekend to see films just like this one – and worse…without supervision!

…and although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them.

When an individual or a nation turns its back on God, the chosen course is always downward.  The Great Roman Empire wasn’t defeated militarily.  It fell for many reasons.  But primarily it “rotted” from the inside out.  Long before the political decline came the moral decline.  This pattern has been repeated down through the ages and it has struck every great civilization.  Babylon, Nazi Germany, Russia under Lenin, the pattern is the same.  America, are you next?

But what else is also true?  A society in moral decay is ripe for the Gospel of Christ.
As I’ve said before, “God gave them up,” but this doesn’t mean God gives up on them.

The city of Rome was the center of wickedness on the earth.  All that was wrong with the world could be found there.  It was a city wholly given over to evil.  It was a city where wrong was celebrated and right was punished.  It was a city of emperor-worship, pagan idolatry, gross immorality, open homosexuality, a city where fathers routinely abandoned their infant sons and daughters, and a city where slavery was rampant, a city built upon insatiable cruelty.  And how did the Apostle Paul, an unknown Jew from Tarsus, feel about visiting Rome for the first time?  What does this book say?

Romans 1

15: So, for my part, I am eager to preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome.

16: For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes,

The Apostle Paul knew all of Rome needed nothing as much as it needed the life-changing power of the gospel.  And nowhere but in Jesus Christ our Lord did that power exist.

Rightly Dividing the Word of Truth
(2 Timothy 2:15)

This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. 1Timothy 2:3-4

Romans by the Book                                                Lesson 14

Hello and welcome back.  I pray you’re all getting comfortable with the idea of participating in a Bible study.  Once you know some of the basics you are off and running, as they say.  One of the first and foremost things you must learn is to Rightly Divide the Word of Truth (2 Timothy 2:15).

What’s that?  I’m glad you asked.  When you separate those things that were written to the Jews under the Law from those things that were written to the church of God in the Age of Grace, you are Rightly Dividing the Word of Truth.

For example many people have been taught, incorrectly, that the New Testament the Christian Age or the Church Age begins at Matthew 1:1 and that is incorrect.  You see, Scripture says Jesus Christ came to His own, under the Law, to fulfill the promises made to the fathers (see Romans 15:8).  Therefore, the four gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, and most of the book of Acts are actually a continuation of God’s Old Testament Prophetic Program.  Others contend that the Church Age begins at Pentecost (Acts 2) and this is the majority and traditional view.

Here’s the problem with the traditional view.  The Church, the Body of Christ, was a new creation, a secret (a mystery) known only by God from the foundations of the earth, and revealed to only to Paul.  As such, it did not exist before Paul (Ephesians 3:1-10; Galatians 2:6-9; Colossians 1:24-27; Romans 16:25-27).

What was Pentecost?  Pentecost was one of 7 Jewish feast days.  It occurred 50 days after Passover.  It was the time Jesus instructed His disciples to wait and remain in Jerusalem to receive the promised Holy Spirit (Luke 24:29; John 14:16-17).  The coming of the Holy Spirit was a key component of God’s prophetic program to Israel (Isaiah 44:3, 59:21).  It was not the birth to the Church, the Body of Christ, for there is nothing in the Old Testament that spoke of this Church.  Rather, the baptism of the Holy Spirit was an essential part of the fulfillment of the New Covenant which Jesus had initiated at the Last Supper (Jeremiah 31:33; Ezekiel 16, 37; Matthew 26:27-28).

I pray you find this information useful as you continue to study your Bible.

Please open your Bible to Romans chapter 1.  We’ll start today’s lesson at verse 24.

What is the judgment of God when mankind turns away from Him?
God gives them up.  But be careful.  This is not saying God gives up on them!

We learned that with each step man takes away from God the further and further into depravity he or she sinks.  This is the message of verses 25-27.  They reveal the progressive nature of sin specifically idolatry and then sexual sin.

*Suggested reading: Isaiah 44:9-20 – The Folly of Idolatry

Romans 1

25: For they (Paul is specifically addressing gentiles of old in these passages.  No Law was ever given to the gentiles as it was given to the Jews.  The Law was under no command from God to be spread as the Gospel of Grace is today) exchanged the (what) truth of God for (what) a lie, (what lie?  They can be like God.  So who is behind this deception– the god of this world is working this of course.  The father of lies, Satan, is against anything God is for) and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever.  Amen.

26: For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural,

27: and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error.

Verse 25: even though they knew God existed, they chose to reject Him; and they are without excuse (verse 20).  They “made” or fashioned objects of iron, wood, and stone to worship instead of the one true God.  You see, it’s man’s nature to worship something – God put that instinct in us.

For those who are thinking they will be able to stand before their Creator at the Great White Throne Judgment and claim ignorance of His existence I have news.  That won’t work.  Scripture says everyone was born with the knowledge of their Creator.
John 1

9: There was the true Light (the word Light is capitalized so it is referring to deity.
This passage refers to the Lord Jesus Christ who is the Light of the world.  Now read carefully), which coming into the world, enlightens every man (you may add the word woman here without doing any harm to the text or changing its meaning).

I prefer the KJV translation myself.

John 1

9: That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.
(KJV) – it’s saying the same thing; I just prefer the way it’s said.

These passages indicate that we are “born” with the innate knowledge of our Creator.  Which means: coming directly from the mind rather than being acquired by experience or from external sources.

Verses 26-27: the Gentiles next step away from their Creator God took them from idolatry to sexual immorality.

God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts…

Note the process.  Idolatry always leads to immorality and this is usually sexual in nature.  This is why the worship of the false god Baal in the Old Testament was accompanied by temple prostitution.

Once men invent gods of their own making, they can then rewrite the rules of human conduct.  Rules like the Ten Commandments no longer apply to them.

Want to sleep around.  Why not?
Want to commit adultery.  Why not?
Want to have pre-marital sex?  Why not everyone else is?  Why not go with the flow?
Want to download pornography?  Why not?

Without God and His Commandments, anything goes, all things are on the table.

But why is illicit sex so destructive to the Believer in particular and why does Scripture command us to flee from it?  Yes, this is a command from Head Quarters!  To find one of the answers we must return to the book of beginnings (Genesis).

The Lord God created Adam in the Garden of Eden and then said, “It is not good for man to be alone.  I will make him a helper (help meet) suitable for him.” (Genesis 2:18)

The LORD God caused Adam to fall into a deep sleep; then He took one of his ribs and closed up that place.  The LORD God fashioned into a woman the rib which He had taken from the man, and brought her to the man.  (See Genesis 2:21-22)

Adam named her “Woman.”
Which means: taken out of Man.  (See Genesis 2:23)

Genesis 2

24: For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh.

25: And the man and his (what’s the next word) wife were both naked and were not ashamed.

With this act the LORD God established the institutions of marriage and the family.

These two “Bedrock” institutions are critical to the LORD God’s plans to populate the planet earth with God-fearing children.

Let’s back up just a bit; when the LORD God created Adam he gave them a command.
Did you catch that?

Now most people miss the point I’m about to make because when they read their Bible they read it but they don’t see it.   So pay close attention.  I guarantee you that most of Christendom has no idea this verse is even in their Bible…but it is.

Genesis 1

27: God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created Him;
(Pay attention – read carefully) male and female He created them

That’s not a typo.  The LORD God created Adam bisexual = describes something such as a flower that has both male and female reproductive organs.

The woman was already in Adam when he was created.

Now read verse 28.

Genesis 1

28: God blessed (who) them; and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

In other words, the LORD God gave them dominion over all the earth and told them to be fruitful and multiply (fill the earth with your offspring in other words).

Only the woman wasn’t “on the scene” just yet.  Are you still with me?
When the LORD God created man and then brought him the woman to be his “help meet” He established the institutions of marriage and the family.

What happened next?
If you know the Old Testament, then you know the garden was invaded by the serpent (Satan – the destroyer).   The LORD God created something that was “very good” so Satan set his mind to destroy it.  Satan deceived the woman by lying, causing the woman to doubt what God had said; Adam then chose to eat the forbidden fruit, and sin entered the world by Adam’s willful disobedience and not the woman’s for she was deceived.

As I’ve often said, anything God is for Satan is against; this includes you if you’re a Believer.  It certainly includes the institutions of marriage and the family which have been ordained by God.

Soon after Adam and the woman were joined together as “one flesh” Satan found a way to destroy their joy and bring the world they lived in to an end.

Believers it is not a matter of “if” your marriage and your family will come under attack; it is a matter of “when.”

The Christian marriage is the KEY battleground in Spiritual warfare.

Can we deny that this is the age where divorces, adultery, homosexual unions, are becoming acceptable even among the churched?

Can we deny the statistics which show young people in the church are skipping marriage altogether and choosing to live together instead?

The Christian divorce rate is perched right around 50% today; the same as the rest of the unbelieving world.  The rippling effect this has had on the family unit has impacted our homes, our schools, our communities, and our nation.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau in November, 2009, there are approximately 13.7 million single parents in the United States today, and those parents are responsible for raising 21.8 million children (approximately 26% of children under 21 in the U.S. today).

The U.S. Census Bureau does not break these stats down as to Believers and non-believers, but they are still remarkable.

Of the mothers who are custodial parents:
45% are currently divorced or separated
34.2% have never been married
19% are married (In most cases, these numbers represent women who have remarried.)
1.7% was widowed

Of the fathers who are custodial parents:
57.8% are divorced or separated
20.9% have never married
20% are currently married (In most cases, these numbers represent men who have remarried.)
Less than 1% was widowed

According to the Single Parent Success Foundation

63 % of teen-age suicides nationwide are individuals from single-parent families.

75 % of children in chemical dependency hospitals are from single-parent families.

More than 1/2 of all youths incarcerated in the U.S. lived in one-parent families as a child.

7.7 % of all out-of-wedlock births in the country in 2008 were to girls under the age of 18.

I could continue giving you stats like these but for the sake of time we’ll move on…

We’ve taken the pledge of allegiance, God, and prayer out of our schools.
We teach evolution as fact and refuse to even introduce Creationism into the classroom.
What’s the end result when people choose to reject God?  There’s no mystery here.
History has shown us and yet as a nation we continue to move down this dark road.

Today we have children bullying children, guns in school, drugs in school, a lack of respect for authority figures, no respect for rules or the law, de-sensitized children committing mass murders without remorse, and little self-esteem.

Children are without a moral compass to guide them, they are without goals; children lack respect for their parent(s), and they have little if any self-control.

Children engage in fist fights and film these on You-Tube for the world to see.
Children are sexting sexually explicit and suggestive pictures of themselves via cell phones.  Skype has allowed the sharing of nude and semi-nude images over the internet and much worse.  51% of teen girls cite pressure from guys as a reason to send these explicit messages and images while only 18% of the teen boys say so.  But I’m not convinced of these statistics.  Immorality is a slippery slope.  I don’t buy the excuses.

I will ask the question, “Where are the parent(s)?”
Parents, these are not society’s ills these are your concerns.  50% of the Christian families are now mirroring the world and the god of this world (Satan) couldn’t be more pleased.

I pray you can see why Scripture commands a Believer to flee from “all sexual immorality.”  It’s the second step an individual takes, after Idolatry, in their “turning away” from God.

1 Corinthians 6

18: Flee immorality.  Every other sin that a man (or woman) commits is outside the body, but the immoral man sins against his own body.

19: Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own?
