Rightly Dividing the Word of Truth
(2 Timothy 2:15)
This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. 1Timothy 2:3-4
Romans by the Book
Please open your Bible to Romans chapter 1.
We’ll drop in at verse 5 and finish the second half of my teaching point from the previous lesson.
In the last lesson, I wanted to show you that the Lord Jesus Christ “called” Paul to be an “apostle” to preach “the divine mystery of grace” to the gentiles, “for His name’s sake.”
In this lesson, I want to show you that in this “Dispensational Period,” God’s Grace is received on an individual basis; one soul is saved at a time. Previously under God’s Prophetic Program, salvation was to have come to the entire nation of Israel or in another word nationally.
Under the Prophetic Program every Jewish man, woman, and child had to believe that Jesus was the Christ (or the Messiah) before the King and the Kingdom of Heaven (on earth) which was promised in the Abrahamic Covenant could be fulfilled.
Jesus Christ said,
17: “Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill.”
The message of John 3:16 (besides God loves us) first and foremost is this - believe in Jesus’ name and be saved.
Of course I need to support this statement with Truth from Scripture.
So please follow me to the book of John.
I’ve chosen a few Bible verses where this Bible Truth is so plainly written everyone should be able to understand what the book is saying.
31: but these (words of the Apostle John) have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is (read carefully) the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life (because He died for your sins, and rose from the dead on the 3rd day? NO! Read what the book says- and that believing you may have “eternal” life) in His name.
Let’s look at another one.
Here we have the Biblical account of Phillip and the Ethiopian eunuch.
An angel of the Lord sent Phillip to this man who he found sitting in a chariot, reading from the book of Isaiah. Long story shortened, the Ethiopian had questions about Jesus and salvation which Phillip answered for him. As they traveled along, they came to some water. The eunuch asked Phillip, “Look! Water!
What prevents me from being baptized?”
37: And Philip said, "If you believe with all your heart, you may." And he (the Ethiopian) answered and said, "I believe that Jesus Christ (shed His blood for my sins and that He died on the cross for me and then rose from the dead on the 3rd day according to the Scriptures…No! What does the book say) is the Son of God."]
Let’s review one more.
This is the Apostle John writing to his brethren (the Jews).
1 John 3
23: This is His (God the Father) commandment, that we believe in the name of His Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, just as He commanded us.
This is the message of the Gospel of the Kingdom under God’s Prophetic Program.
“Believe in the name of His Son Jesus Christ…” And be saved!
But the nation of Israel rejected God’s Son and His offer of the Kingdom.
Both the Jews and Gentiles (Roman authorities) conspired against Jesus and crucified Him. See Psalms 2:1-3 (this is prophecy). Psalms 2 was written approximately 1000BC.
But God is never shocked by the decisions or the deeds of His creation.
God knew before the creation of the world that Eve would succumb to the serpents lie and that Adam would choose to eat the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden.
God knew He would send His Son to redeem His lost mankind.
God knew that Jesus would be rejected by His own people and crucified.
How do we know all this?
Scripture reveals it to us.
This is the Apostle Peter speaking to a crowd of Jewish men on the day of Pentecost. These men had gathered from distant regions to celebrate the Feast Day of Pentecost, as the Mosaic Law required. As you can tell by this, the Mosaic Law is still in effect at this time.
22: Men (from where) of Israel, listen to these words: Jesus the Nazarene, a man attested to you by God with miracles and wonders, and signs which God performed through Him in your midst, just as you yourselves know –
23: this Man, delivered over by the (watch this) predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God,
Let’s stop right there. This is why we’re here.
I bet there are few Christians who know this verse is even in their Bible.
But it is, so you have to deal with it.
I prefer the KJV translation.
23: Him (Jesus Christ), being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain:
You are familiar with the word “counsel.”
It means to “consult with others.”
Scripture is informing us (teaching us) that at some time back in eternity past (before Genesis 1:1) the Holy Trinity met in “counsel” and "determined" or laid out the plan for the history of mankind from the creation of Adam to the Second Coming of Jesus Christ.
The thing I find so incredible about this Bible Truth is that even though we are created with free will – the ability to choose our own way, make our own decisions, some big, some small, but some that change the course of nations, God is right on His timeline!
Jesus Christ paid the “sin debt” God the Father demanded, for all mankind, when He went to the Cross of Calvary and there died.
Acts 2:23 is informing us that this was a work of God. It was pre-determined.
So, the Lord Jesus Christ “called” Saul to be the apostle to the gentiles and to the Jews also “for now there is no difference.”
God’s plans for the nation of Israel are not over as some preach and teach!
They are simply “on hold,” per the Word of God.
God’s covenant promises will never be broken. God does not break His word!
I don’t want to get too far ahead of myself. So we will leave this here for now.
God’s has not forsaken His people the Jews.
The Abrahamic Covenant is still in effect.
There are still seven years remaining in God’s Prophetic Program.
The Tribulation years are these final seven years and they will be fulfilled.
